The Florida Grantor, Winter 2008

The Able Trust Employment Initiative for Veterans with Disabilities

The Able Trust recently awarded $540,000 in grants to nine organizations across the state to improve employment opportunities for veterans with disabilities. Projects supported by The Able Trust will provide services like resume assistance, career planning and job coaching. These programs serve veterans in 24 Florida counties.

Grants awarded will support existing non-profit organizations in the Sunshine State that will provide Florida citizens with disabilities employment-related services. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that more than 30,000 veterans returned home with service-related disabilities between October 2001 and February 2008 (e.g., amputations, burns, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and traumatic brain injuries).

These grants coincide with Governor Charlie Crist’s recent creation of Florida Vets First established to address the needs of Florida’s military veterans. In collaboration with Florida Vets First, The Able Trust has made this grant funding available to aid Florida’s veterans with disabilities.

“Our brave men and women in uniform put their lives on the line and often their personal affairs on hold so that we may enjoy a free and democratic way of life,” Governor Crist said. “We are committed to serving the more than 1.8 million veterans who defended our nation and who now call our great state home.”

In addition to awarding these grants, The Able Trust is also working to raise awareness among employers about the skills veterans with disabilities have to offer. Overwhelmingly businesses have shown enthusiasm for hiring and creating opportunities for veterans both newly returned from Iraq and seasoned veterans from Desert Storm and Vietnam.

Since 1991, The Able Trust has awarded more than $23 million in grant funding to individuals and nonprofit agencies throughout Florida for employment- related purposes. Together with its programs, The Able Trust grant-making activities enable more than 2,000 Florida citizens to enter the workforce each year.
