In Memoriam

Dr. George Spelios of Miami, a founding director and past chair of The Able Trust Board, passed away in December 2004. Dr. Spelios was a true advocate for Florida citizens with disabilities, touching the lives of many through his passion and commitment to serve people in need. In addition to his leadership and volunteerism for The Able Trust’s mission, Spelios was instrumental in founding Sunrise Community, a nonprofit organization serving individuals with developmental disabilities.

In his honor, The Able Trust has established the “Dr. George Spelios Leadership Award,” an annual award which will recognize an executive director of a nonprofit agency during The Able Trust’s Ability Awards. The award will reflect his great leadership and advocacy for people with disabilities. Recipients will show proven leadership through their development and sustainability of programs that provide employment support for Florida citizens with disabilities. Nomination forms will be available early next year as part of the 2006 Ability Awards packet.

Dr. Spelios was always a strong supporter and friend of The Able Trust and its mission. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of dedication to bettering the lives of people with disabilities will live on.
