The Florida Grantor, Spring 2005

President’s Message

The Able Trust staff has been busy the first few months of 2005, completing another quarter of grant awards and hosting a memorable Ability Awards reception, among other tasks.

The Foundation awarded $330,669 in grants during the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2005, and by doing so, we had the opportunity to reach out to new agencies who had never received a grant from The Able Trust before. Remember, if your agency is interested in submitting a grant proposal, visit The Knowledge Center section of our website for useful ideas and information about writing a proposal and creating a successful employment program.

On March 11, we hosted our annual Ability Awards ceremony. The Able Trust was very impressed with all of our nominees and award recipients. We are pleased to honor and recognize businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals throughout Florida making a difference in and improving the lives of people with disabilities.

This April marks the one-year anniversary of the Bikers Care Tag, Florida’s first specialty license tag for motorcyclists. As of February, 8,381 plates have been sold, raising over $125,000. The Bikers Care Tag ranks 35th in sales out of 106 tags. Proceeds are shared between The Able Trust, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program, Centers for Independent Living and Prevent Blindness Florida.

The Able Trust will continue to stay busy in the coming months. The legislative session always presents opportunities to network with other disability organizations that gather at the Capitol.
