The Florida Grantor, Spring 2004

President’s Message

Spring is in full swing and The Able Trust has hit the ground running with various projects and activities.

We kicked off the New Year with a press conference and editorial board tours to promote the statewide Employer Study on Attitudes Toward Hiring Persons with Disabilities. Thanks to the support of the Lieutenant Governor, we generated tremendous publicity for this important issue statewide. We will also begin an extensive educational campaign for local Chambers of Commerce and human resource groups in the coming months.

This spring we began promotions for the new Bikers Care tag, Florida’s first specialty license tag for motorcyclists. The red, white and blue tag will be available at Tax Collector’s offices in April. The Able Trust will share proceeds from the tag with the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program, Centers for Independent Living and Prevent Blindness Florida, and our hope is to raise thousands of dollars each year to support these programs.

The Foundation has also been participating in a number of disability awareness days at Florida’s Capitol during this Session. This is an excellent way for The Able Trust to show our support for the organizations that work with Floridians with disabilities every day. If you have an awareness day this Session in which you’d like The Able Trust to participate, please feel free to contact our office with details.

In the meantime, the Foundation continues its efforts to meet the employment needs of Florida’s 3 million citizens with disabilities. We recently reached the $14 million mark with our grant awards this quarter and are looking forward to another round of successful grantmaking to close out the fiscal year in June. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.abletrust.org for details on submitting a grant proposal, or to get more information about any of the projects we have underway.
