The Able Trust has kept busy throughout the year, and it seems that 2004, with its many surprises and challenges, has flown by.
Our first quarter grant awards of Fiscal Year 2005 helped The Able Trust surpass the $15 million mark, another milestone for the Foundation.
With the establishment of four new High School/High Tech sites, we now have the opportunity to reach out to more youth with disabilities in more areas of the state. A very big thank you goes out to all of our HS/HT Program Coordinators, local and statewide, for persevering through a hectic start to the 2004-2005 school year. We look forward to an exciting spring semester, filled with HS/HT activities and field trips.
Disability Mentoring Day was a huge success again this year. We held a press conference with Governor Bush on October 20 to announce that Disability Mentoring Day was occurring throughout the state and emphasize the importance of job shadowing and mentoring young people with disabilities. Florida had a great turnout, with over 600 students and 300 employers participating, and we are proud to announce that we have been selected by the AAPD as the National Kick-Off Site for Disability Mentoring Day 2005.
The Florida BLN is flourishing with local chapters all over the state, including the Big Bend, Polk County and Miami areas. Through the BLN and its local chapters, The Able Trust continues to dispel the myths and promote the benefits of hiring people with disabilities to employers across Florida.
As we approach the New Year, The Able Trust looks forward to meeting new challenges under the leadership of our continuing Chair, Florence Seiler. We wish all of our friends and supporters Happy Holidays and look forward to working with you in 2005.
