Florida High School/High Tech (HS/HT) is a program funded by The Able Trust that helps prepare students with disabilities for post-secondary education and careers in science, math, engineering and technology. Successful students such as Evan and Amber are just two examples of the 300+ students who have benefited from the program's innovative approach to preparing youth for employment.
Evan, a Citrus County HS/HT student, recently job shadowed with a Legal Services office. Evan participated in new client intake and attended a clinic with attorneys and pro bono clients. He was invited to attend the Citrus County Bar Luncheon, where because of his professionalism and attitude he was mistaken for a law student. As a result of a successful job shadowing experience, he was offered a summer internship and has been invited to spend a day shadowing with a judge.
Amber, a 2002 graduate of the Hillsborough County Schools HS/HT program, was selected to participate in a video that will be used to educate high school students with learning differences about the importance of self-advocacy skills in the workplace and post-secondary educational settings. Amber is currently studying computer drafting and design at ITT Technical Institute and works at a restaurant.
