Spring has typically ushered in the Legislative Session in the Capitol City, but as you know, this year's Session jumpstarted the New Year. The Able Trust spent many long days at the Capitol monitoring activities that would affect the disability community. After a long 60 days, several bills passed including an increase in funding for the Transportation Disadvantaged Trust Fund, the establishment of a Consumer Directed Care program, election reform to ensure accessible voting for persons with disabilities and a personal care attendant bill.
During that time The Able Trust also had several opportunities to network with friends in the disability community through Capitol activities and "Awareness" days.
One such activity included our own legislative reception on March 7, which also helped kick off the Foundation's 10-year anniversary of awarding over $10 million in grant funds. Lieutenant Governor Frank Brogan, along with several legislators and disability advocates, joined us in the celebration.
March also gave The Able Trust and our Board a chance to get down to business with a review of its three-year strategic plan. Several exciting outcomes resulted, including two newly released Requests for Proposals (RFP) for an employment project in Monroe County and a Native-American specific employment project in Escambia/Santa Rosa Counties.
In the coming months, we will continue to keep you informed of more 10-year anniversary plans, as well as other program activities such as grant funding, High School/High Tech, etc.
