FGA Update

Nominations Being Accepted for 2000 Ability Awards

The Able Trust/FGA is accepting nominations for the 2000 Ability Awards, which recognize individuals, nonprofit agencies, employers and other organizations that have made outstanding achievements to the state by increasing employment opportunities for Florida citizens with disabilities.

Nominations are being accepted for the following awards: Beverly Chapman Award for Outstanding Employment Placement Program, which recognizes a nonprofit organization that has developed an outstanding job placement program for people with disabilities; The Able Trust Award for Outstanding Entrepreneur, which recognizes an individual with a disability who has shown proven advancements in his or her self-owned business; Employer of the Year, which recognizes small, medium and large-sized businesses showing outstanding leadership in the employment of people with disabilities; and Media Award, which recognizes an individual or an organization for its innovative promotion of the employment of people with disabilities through the use of Florida media.

The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, August 25, 2000, at The Able Trust, 106 East College Avenue, Suite 820, Tallahassee, Florida 32301.

Award winners will be recognized at The Able Trust's Ability Awards Ceremony at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa on Thursday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. Award winners will receive statewide recognition and a Commendation from Governor Jeb Bush.

Win National Recognition and Cash Award from NOD/UPS

The National Organization on Disability (NOD) and United Parcel Service (UPS) are teaming up for the 2001 NOD/UPS Community Awards Competition, which recognizes community programs that promote the full participation and contribution of people with disabilities. Entries for the competition may be submitted by all communities (e.g. towns, cities and counties) in the United States and its territories, including members of the NOD's Community Partnership Program. All communities are eligible for the $10,000 Grand Prize, which will be awarded to the best overall entry that increases the participation of people with disabilities in community life.

Profiles of the year 2000 Community Award winners are posted on NOD's website at www.nod.org. NOD will announce the winners for the competition in January, 2001.
