Tallahassee Hosts ADA Torch Relay

The 10th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) brought its "Torch Across America" from Houston, Texas to New York City to celebrate the landmark legislation signed into effect by President George Bush on July 26, 1990. More than 500 activities were planned across the country to celebrate the positive changes that the ADA has implemented. The Torch passed through Tallahassee on Monday, July 17, 2000, and carried with it a number of activities to help mark the celebration. Supporters of the ADA began arriving in Tallahassee on Sunday, July 16, for the Center for Independent Living Showcase reception, which took place at the DoubleTree Hotel. The reception highlighted the activities of all the CIL's across Florida.

To kick off torch activities, a breakfast was held on Monday, July 17, sponsored by the CIL of North Florida. From there the relay began and featured torchbearers with disabilities, including The Able Trust's own Mary Peterson, Information and Referral Specialist.

Despite the summer heat, torchbearers traveled the 10-mile route throughout the Capitol city, with ceremonial stops at Florida State University, Florida A & M University and the Capitol. Lieutenant Governor Frank Brogan joined spectators and torchbearers at the Capitol to express his support of the ADA.

The event culminated with a Post-Torch Relay Party at the Tallahassee Leon-County Civic Center, featuring live entertainment by Van Gogh and a Wall-of-Fame Ceremony honoring Floridians with disabilities who have made outstanding contributions.

Along with Tallahassee, several Florida cities marked the anniversary with their own special celebrations, including relays, seminars and educational workshops.
