The Able Trust is seeking volunteers for the Florida Youth Leadership Forum. The YLF, which will take place July 20 through 23, 2000 in Tallahassee, is a leadership conference for high school juniors and seniors with disabilities. Student delegates will be selected from around the state to learn about the history of the disability movement, community resources, and personal leadership development.
Approximately 20 volunteers are needed to assist during the YLF. Positions include Facilitators and Co-facilitators, who can assist the small group sessions with discussions, completion of leadership exercises and development of personal leadership plans; Peer Counselors and Program Assistants, young adults (ages 19 - 24) who will interact with the delegates, assist the counseling staff and promote spirit and motivation; and Dorm Parents, adults who will advise the delegates in the campus dormitory and will be expected to reside in campus housing during the entire forum.
All of these volunteer positions are considered full-time and require that participants remain on-site from July 19 (training) through the 23. Volunteers will be required to provide their own transportation to the event. Housing and meals will be provided by The Able Trust.
Persons interested in volunteering must submit an application to The Able Trust. If you would like more information, please call Kristen Knapp at 888-838-2253 or send an email to kristen@abletrust.org.
High School/ High Tech (HSHT) is a community-based partnership designed to encourage students with disabilities to explore the fields of science, engineering, and technology. HSHT helps motivate students with disabilities to explore their own interests and potential and aim for employment in one of these fields.
The HSHT program incorporates a mix of learning experiences, including corporate site visits, career shadowing and summer internships.
The Able Trust is encouraging agencies to develop a HSHT program in their area. Donna Mundy, director of the project, is available to assist agencies with start-up activities for their HSHT program. If your agency is interested in learning more about becoming a HSHT site in Florida, contact Donna at 407-631-5047 or email flhsht@aol.com.
