Liaison News
Florida Disability Mentoring Day is Wednesday, October 19, 2011.
The Florida DMD statewide planning committee is organized to assist Community Liaisons with resources needed to implement successful mentoring experiences for students and job seekers with disabilities. The following dates and deadlines will help you with planning and ensure you have the materials you need for a successful DMD event. Interested liaisons must register in order to participate in conference calls, be recognized by the Florida DMD Committee, and receive technical assistance, other support and free promotional materials and accessible literature.
Suggested Planning Timeline
- March, 2011 Register as a liaison with The Able Trust.
- May, 2011 Assemble local organizing committee.
- June, 2011 Order promotional materials. Develop budget, pre-plan for event(s).
- June 16, 2011 – 3:00 PM EST 1st Community Liaison Conference Call
- July, 2011 Outreach to business/community partners and employer mentors.
- July 28, 2011 – 3:00 PM EST 2nd Community Liaison Conference Call
- August, 2011 Recruit Mentees and Mentors (distribute applications), finalize sponsors.
- August 25, 2011 - 3:00 p.m. EST 3rd Community Liaison Conference Call
- September, 2011 Finalize event logistics and guest speakers (where applicable). Match mentees with mentors. Arrange accommodations (where needed). Arrange transportation. Develop your media plan.
- September 10, 2011 Suggested deadline for Mentee/Mentor applications.
- September 29, 2011 - 3:00 p.m. EST Final Community Liaison Conference Call
- September 30, 2011 Orders due for printed recognition certificates signed by Governor/honorary chair.
- October, 2011 – National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)
- September 30 or October 3, 2011 – State Launch Activities TBD
- October 18, 2011 Disseminate press release about local activities.
- October 19, 2011 Disability Mentoring Day!

These relationships will result in job shadowing experiences, internships, and employment. As long as there is DMD, participating businesses will continue to gain disability awareness.”
