FAQ

How can I participate in HS/HT?

Visit the HS/HT Project Sites listing, locate your county and contact the project director nearest you. If you don't see your county listed, check our site periodically for updates. You can also talk to a teacher or disability leader about staring up a site in your county.

Does it cost money to participate?

No, there is no cost associated with becoming a HS/HT student.

Is parent permission required for participation?

Yes, all students under the age of 18 cannot participate in the program without permission of a parent or legal guardian. Your HS/HT site will require the completion of an enrollment packet, which usually includes parental consent, medical release and media release forms.

When does HS/HT take place?

Each HS/HT site determines the activity schedule. Most sites have several activities going on throughout the month. During the school year, events will typically take place after school hours, but there might be weekend activities as well. Students could also be given the opportunity to participate in a part-time internship during the summer.

Where do the HS/HT participants meet?

Most sites have a central meeting location, such as a classroom or local agency, where the HS/HT staff and students gather regularly. For special events, the location depends on the type of activity.

What is the time commitment for participants?

Some students become very involved in HS/HT activities and may spend many hours a month participating. Other students may have additional time commitments outside of HS/HT and spend less time in HS/HT activities. The time spent in the program is up to you.

Is homework assigned as part of the program?

To prepare for some site visits or activities, homework such as keeping a journal or doing research, might be assigned.

How many years can I participate in HS/HT?

There is no restriction on how many years you can participate in the program. However, HS/HT students can only participate if they are between the ages of 14 - 22. After high school, the program continues to offer services to support the transition process into postsecondary education or employment. Once the transition period is complete, HS/HT alumni can still choose to be involved through peer mentoring or volunteering activities.

Is HS/HT only for students who plan to attend college?

No, while postsecondary education is one of the goals of HS/HT, many students may choose employment or volunteer programs. HS/HT is designed to prepare students for life after high school, no matter what path they may choose.

Does HS/HT take place during the summer?

HS/HT takes place all year long. During the summer, many sites offer students an opportunity to participate in unpaid or paid part-time internships.

Am I guaranteed a summer internship?

Internship opportunities depend on the location, business participation and availability of community resources. They are also based on student participation in HS/HT.

How many hours per week are summer internships?

The summer internships vary for each site, but students typically work 25 hours a week for six weeks.

Are the summer internships paid?

Summer internships can be unpaid or paid. In many cases, internships have resulted in paid part-time employment for students as they continue through high school.
