Parents and Caregivers
Get Involved
Family involvement and support is vital to the High School/High Tech (HS/HT) program. Students who receive support from their family members are shown to have more confidence in themselves and higher expectations for their future.
Although many activities are for students only, family members can still participate. Many parents and caregivers provide transportation or are involved in their local HS/HT advisory board, if applicable. Families are invited to attend HS/HT events such as kickoffs, awards ceremonies and employer appreciations. During events, parents and caregivers are able to meet HS/HT staff, participating employers and other students and their families.
Here are a few ways you and your family can also get involved to facilitate a positive outcome for your child:
- Keep high expectations for your child, building on his or her strengths, interests and needs
- Foster your child's ability to achieve independence and self-sufficiency
- Guide your child in the transition to adulthood
- Give your child access to information about higher education, employment and community resources
- Talk to school officials and community partners about planning the transition process
- Stay knowledgeable about the rights and responsibilities under disability-related legislation
- Communicate with medical, professional and peer support networks
