FAQ
What is HS/HT?
High School/High Tech (HS/HT) is designed to provide young people with all types of disabilities the opportunity to explore jobs or postsecondary education leading to technology-related careers.
Why the emphasis on technology?
Technology that was once uncommon is now commonplace is most workplace environments. To meet the demands of the 21st century workforce, one must become successful in our technologically savvy society.
Does it cost money to participate?
No, there is no cost associated with becoming a HS/HT student.
When does HS/HT take place?
Each HS/HT site determines the activity schedule. Most sites have several activities going on throughout the month. During the school year, events will typically take place after school hours, but there might be weekend activities as well. Students could also be given the opportunity to participate in a part-time internship during the summer.
Where do the HS/HT participants meet?
Most sites have a central meeting location, such as a classroom or local agency, where the HS/HT staff and students gather regularly. For special events, the location depends on the type of activity.
What is the time commitment for participants?
Some students become very involved in HS/HT activities and may spend many hours a month participating. Other students may have additional time commitments outside of HS/HT and spend less time in HS/HT activities. The time spent in the program is up to you.
Is parent permission required for participation?
Yes, all students under the age of 18 cannot participate in the program without the permission of a parent or legal guardian. Your child's HS/HT site will require the completion of an enrollment packet, which usually includes parental consent, medical release and media release forms.
What are the affects on HS/HT students?
Each year, over 1200 students with disabilities participate in local Florida HS/HT programs. Nearly 90 percent of Florida HS/HT graduates enrolled in postsecondary education or training. These students reported that HS/HT motivated them in their decisions to pursue higher education or training, helped them set career goals and increased their self-esteem
Can parents, caregivers and families attend HS/HT activities?
Although many activities are for students only, family involvement is an essential part of the program. Many parents and caregivers provide transportation or are involved in their local HS/HT advisory board, if applicable. Families are invited to attend HS/HT events such as kickoffs, awards ceremonies and employer appreciations. During events, parents and caregivers are able to meet HS/HT staff, participating employers and other students and their families.
Is transportation provided for HS/HT activities?
Transportation for out-of-town field trips is typically provided. Trips to local events vary with each HS/HT site.
