MIAMI DADE COLLEGE NORTH CAMPUS
Understanding disabled's obstacles
Volunteers joined staff and students of Miami Dade College's North Campus on Wednesday to experience what it is like to move around campus in a wheelchair and to be visually impaired.
The campus was observing Abilities Awareness Day.
Activities began at 8 a.m. with screening of the movie The Brooke Ellison Story, based on the true story of a quadriplegic who overcame great obstacles to go to college.
Following the film, attendees took part in ''Walk a Mile in My Shoes,'' an event that allowed them to get a taste of what it is like to have a disability -- by moving around the campus blindfolded or in a wheelchair.
''We continue to be proud of the diversity of our North Campus community and Abilities Awareness Day is a perfect example of promoting that diversity, the success of our students and their determination to accomplish their goals no matter what challenges may exist,'' said North Campus President José A. Vicente.
The observance was co-sponsored by SunTrust Bank, Miami Physical Therapy Associates and South Florida Medical Equipment Company.
