Providing Information & Resources for Hiring People with Disabilities
When determining if your workplace is accessible, there are some questions to keep in mind: Are there designated parking spaces for persons with disabilities close to the entrance? Is there a pathway without abrupt level changes or steps that lead from the parking area to the entrance? If ramps are used to provide access, are they appropriately graded and are handrails provided? You must also be sure the doors are wide enough (36 inches) for people with wheelchairs, and that they are easy to open. The personnel office should be in an accessible location. And ask yourself if there are pathways to the bathroom, water fountain, and public telephone? Can people with disabilities use them? The elevators are also extremely important. They should be easily accessible to all persons with disabilities, including the raised symbols or numbers on the control panels. Look around your workplace and note if all signage is appropriate and accessible with visual, learning and cognitive disabilities. And check if the emergency warning system includes both audible and visual alarms.
